Temple Candles

We found these candles burning at the Fo Kuang Shan Buddhist Temple in Amsterdam's Chinatown. The names attached to the candles are commemorations of those who have passed and prayerful intentions for those who remain. Every culture (see image "Grotto" taken in New Orleans) uses fire as an implement to catch the spirit's attention. The life of a candle's flame is an extended prayer. Glass encased candles exist that are designed to burn for 21 days. That should get the most stubborn message across.
