Sakura
The cherry blossom is the national flower of Japan with over 400 varieties
of trees in residence. Cherry blossom viewing became popular in the 6th
century when aristocrats viewed the flowers and wrote poetry. Since the
indigenous Japanese religion Shinto honors the presence of divinity in
nature, the festivity surrounding cherry blossom time seems as much spiritual
as secular. Today cherry time is celebrated with devotion in Japan. Picnickers
eat and drink with abandon under the blossoms. This spectacle is seen
as bittersweet: the beauty of the flowers, the brevity of their lifespan.
