Ochun

Ochun (also spelled Oshun) is the Yoruban river goddess or Orisha. She is in charge of romance, flirtation, seduction, love and marriage, fertility, money, and gold. She is the archetype of joy and pleasure.

Traditional offerings to Ochun include a dish of honey (taste it before serving), copper jewelry, river water, yellow candles, peacock feathers, five shiny copper pennies, fans, mirrors, cakes, oranges, eggs and pumpkins.

She is a Venus-like personality in the Yoruban pantheon, and in Haitian Voudou is known as Erzulie. In Haiti she is honored on Tuesdays and Thursdays with offerings of perfume and fancy expensive foods.

The above photo shows Ochun gazing into her mirror, admiring her own beauty and perhaps planning her next romantic conquest. Here is a spell for love, invoking the power of Ochun.

Ochun Love Spell Ingredients:

One orange

A yellow candle

Honey

Gold glitter

Separate 5 segments of the orange and place them on a plate in star formation. Cover with honey and sprinkle with gold glitter. Write the name of the person you are interested in on a piece of paper, fold it five times, and place it under the yellow candle. Burn the candle five nights in a row while fantasizing about the perfect love you await. At the end of five nights take the ingredients and toss them in a river, stream or creek.

The following recipe is from Judika Illes' book  Earth Mother Magic. (www.judikailles.com.)

Oshun Prosperity Incense

Brown sugar

Five dried orange leaves

Orange zest

l. Pound the ingredients in a mortar and pestle until roughly pulverized.

2. Place in a cast-iron pan and set aflame.

3. Let it burn for a minute or so, then smother the flames. It should smoke rather heavily; allow the aroma to fill the room.

4. Offer some pure spring water and hone to Oshun and tell her what you need.

If you consult the product index, you will also find Blue Ochun. She is dedicated solely to the purpose of healing broken hearts. Wearing a T-shirt with her image, burning her candles and meditating on her healing beauty will get you over a nasty heartbreak and bolster your self- esteem.
