Pluto
R.I.P.
February
18, 1930- August 24, 2006
I
would have loved to be a fly on the wall in Prague when the astronomers
voted to downsize Pluto to a "dwarf" planet. Did no one protest? Only
four hundred of the thousands of members were present. Days before it
appeared that Pluto would retain its planetary dignity and power conferred
by that status. Perhaps it was the Pilsner talking, but the astronomers
made a big booboo. It should have been a convention of astrologers making
the decision. Even the most amateur stargazer can recognize that size
isn't everything.
Happily,
300 of America's top scientists have signed a petition challenging the
Prague prognosis.
Clyde
Tombaugh, who discovered Pluto when he was only 24, is now aboard a spacecraft
headed toward Pluto. It will arrive in 2015 and deposit Clyde's ashes
in the environment.
Keep
Pluto in your hearts, and in your charts!
