Flora
Festival
of Floralia - April 28- May 1
The
Roman Goddess Flora was the deity of flowers and the pleasures of youth.
Vines, olive trees and honey-bearing plants were also sacred to her. The
celebration of Floralia was famous for its dancing, drinking and abundant
use of flowers. Even the animals wore garlands. For these four days and
nights there were games, pantomimes, theater and stripteases. Goats and
hares were set loose to augment fertility. St. Augustine and other Church
fathers abominated Flora and her festival, which they said was a licentious
orgy of nude dancing and promiscuous behavior.
We
found these tulips in the floating flower market of Amsterdam.
Wishing
you a riotous Floralia!
