Longevity
God
Shou xing, the Chinese God of Longevity, is one third of the trio that
includes the God of Luck and the God of Prosperity. He holds the peach
of immortality in one hand and a dragon headed walking stick in the other.
The use of a peach as a symbol of longevity originated over two thousand
years ago. Peach pits were carved into protective amulets for children
to ensure long life. Because evil spirits were said to fear peach wood,
it was frequently carved into a charm and hung on a door to keep danger
away.
The
Longevity God is particularly appealing because his age appears to come
with benevolence and a sense of humor. Don Kelly donated this statue to
us.
His
image is available as 8x10 framed print, t-shirt, candle and greeting
card.
